ASL Missionaries in the Independence Missouri Mission
Did you know that we have ASL elders in the Missouri Independence Mission? These elders are peppered throughout the mission, but there are two designated ASL areas, one in Liberty, Missouri, and one in Olathe, Kansas. Each companionship has a designated ward where members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community can come and worship with a provided ASL interpreter. If you know of someone that is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, please reach out to Chelsea Reeve at 801-390-3690. We are trying to create space in the Kansas City area for our Deaf and Hard of Hearing friends. We do monthly activities and would love to add them to our list of people to invite. We also have a Facebook group called Kansas City Deaf Community, where they can join to be a part of the community and learn when activities are happening. .

Want to Learn ASL?
Have you been wanting to learn ASL? We host a beginner’s ASL class. We are just finishing up
our level one beginner’s class. We are going to advance this class to level two starting in April. We are happy to create another beginner’s class, but only if we have enough people that will attend. Please reach out to Chelsea Reeve if you are interested. These classes are on Thursday nights at the Liberty Missouri Stake Center. If you would like the elders to come teach a mini ASL class so you can learn how to introduce yourself to someone that is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, we would be happy to come to a ward activity, Relief Society meeting, youth activity or any other activity. We love helping people learn more about our Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

ASL Activities
Our next activity is on April 12, 2025. We are doing a potluck at the Liberty Stake Center from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Please sign up and bring something to the Deaf Community Potluck Dinner. There is an ASL session at the temple at 4:30 pm that same day, so the church building will be open from 3:00 pm – 4:15 pm if you are attending that session and would like to drop off your contribution before you attend the temple.

Growing the Community
Those of us working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community have a passion for this work. Our goal is to eventually have a branch of our own. To do this, we need your help to find people in the area that Heavenly Father has prepared. Some of those are members that have fallen
away, because there was no ASL interpreter to help them worship. We need your help to spread the word. With the permission of the Liberty Missouri Stake Presidency, we are asking for anyone that would like to participate in a special fast with us on May 4th . Please mark your calendars and join us in fasting for the Lord to help you be a part of this miraculous work in bringing our Deaf and Hard of Hearing members and friends to a central gathering place where they can feel the spirit and know they belong!
